The Snowy Scientific Committee's Process
What does the Committee do?

The principal functions of the Snowy Scientific Committee are set out under the Snowy Hydro Corporatisation Act 1997, and are:

  •  “to advise the Water Administration Ministerial Corporation each year on the regime for the release of water for environmental reasons under the Snowy water licence.”

  • “to advise that Corporation from time to time on the adequacy of those releases and the programs for management and restoration of the catchments (and the Snowy River and other rivers and streams) receiving water from those releases, including the arrangements for consultation, monitoring and on-going research about those programs.”

The Snowy Scientific Committee is required to provide a copy of each such report to the Water Administration Ministerial Corporation of New South Wales.
How does the Committee do its Work?

The advice, comments and findings of the Committee are given to the NSW government in written form as reports.

For this, the Committee draws on the knowledge and expertise of its members and scientific literature;  and it depends on agencies, authorities and individuals in NSW and Victoria to provide data and information.

The Committee meets 5-6 times per year. A communique is usually issued after each meeting.

The administrative business of the Committee is done by its Executive Officer, Phillip Grenville.  The Executive Officer is also responsible for Enquiries, Media Contact and Liaison, and general business of the Committee.

The administration and work of the Snowy Scientific Committee is supported by the NSW Department of Water and Energy.
